A Room Without Her View

February 17, 2006

I wrestled with absence last night;
a brawl that reconfigured eternity
into less than a heartbeat. Outside
the confines of a four-poster bed,
audience from memories of previous
tenderness looks in, to bet
who will win between fingers and sheets
twisting themselves into a deadlock
until cloth burns skin.

I wrestled with absence last night,
but I woke between sorrow's arms.
