Refractions

August 18, 2005

The mirror saw us in stillness.
Your back towards me
in an effort not to see
what you gladly touched
a lifetime ago. The straight line
that travelled from my heart to
your sleeves trembled as
every second brought tautness to
the point of breaking. In vain
I gasped in an inward silence
to breathe
to grasp again
what slipped away
from the cracks of my incompleteness--
the shadow of your smile.
It seems the only way
to catch the shade
is to walk away from the light.
And the only way to change
a reflection that shows how far you are from me
is to remove oneself from the view.
If that is what it takes
for you to see me again
then let me be absent
from your line of sight
so I can move my lips closer
to your feet.
